Rainbow Country is a series of mixed media works completed between 2009 and 2012. The work incorporates tropes of graphic novels to re-examine Caribbean attitudes, social critique, and self-introspection. The series analyzes issues that relate to contemporary American life, with opinions based on the artist's formative years in Trinidad & Tobago.
The Rainbow Country narrative is centered around the exploits of an alter-ego named Kedar, who is rendered through several scenarios as he makes his way to a public pool on the island of Chacachacare. The series channels reggae music through color, representation and tone. Looking also to Calypso music, Kedar takes on the role of storytelling and spreading knowledge, tackling difficult subjects with a lighter voice, as the musical form was originally intended to. Indeed, Chacachacare, a currently uninhabited island, becomes a place for the fantastic sensibilities of home. Acknowledging the distance of time, the work is nostalgic avoiding the urge of contemporary social critique.
Rainbow Country at Paradice Palase will go on view July 22 – July 30, 1-5pm each day . The opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, July 23rd , 6-9pm, and the closing reception will be Thursday July 30th , 6-9pm. Paradice Palase is located at 1260 Broadway, Brooklyn NY 11221.
